LAMBERT, George

George Lambert was born at St.Petersburg, Russia in 1873 and came to Australia in 1887. He studied under Julian Ashton in Sydney and Delecluse in Paris where he was influenced by Spanish art and the impressionists.

Lambert served in Egypt and Gallipoli from 1917-19 as an official war artist with the rank of Captain. He achieved a reputation for excellence in draughtsmanship and highly stylised portraiture, winning the Wynn Prize in 1899 and the Archibald Prize in 1927. He died at Cobbity, NSW in 1930.
