Limited Editions

Limited Editions:

It is the Limited Edition which permits print makers and collectors to agree upon what is an original art print and what is a reproduction. A Limited Edition is a high-quality reproduction of an original work of art and they are individually numbered with the total of the reproductions stated (e.g. the 5th print printed out of a total 250 prints would be numbered like this “5/250”). Limited Editions are printed on high-quality medium and are signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, no more limited edition prints of that image can be produced and therefore, this is what can make the print valuable on the resale or ‘secondary market’.

Artist Proofs:

Additional print runs of the limited edition may be marked A/P or Artist Proof and may also be numbered (e.g. A/P 1/20), and is signed by the artist. The number of artist’s proofs can vary (often 10% of the numbered edition) and may include copies produced while perfecting the edition. There is no difference in the value of limited edition or artist proof prints, however some collectors indicate a preference for a particular number of the edition release or artist proof. Each Limited Edition print come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Certificates of Authenticity:

The Certificate of Authenticity gives genuine fine art Limited Edition print makers the ability to distinguish their work from posters or basic reproductions. By offering the information of the certificate, print makers and artists can guarantee the authenticity of their work. This helps educate their buyers on the value of their print. The issuing of a Certificate of Authenticity adds value to a fine art print. It is a document that states details of the print production, edition number, and is signed by the artist and/or publisher. This provides further proof of the authenticity and ownership.
