About Giclee Art:
Giclee is a French term literally meaning ‘sprayed ink’. It is a very high resolution digital printing method, recognised as a fine art print category like lithographs, etchings and silk-screen prints. Giclee printing is considered the world’s best technique for the reproduction of original works of art, digitally created fine art, and photographic imagery.
Printed on fine art materials, such as water-colour paper, artists canvas, and photographic paper; giclee prints have the look and feel of original art, and have a quality and intensity of colour that is unique to the medium. Giclee prints in permanent pigment inks and high-quality medium have a life expectancy of up to 200 years based on museum quality lighting. All of our artist Limited Editions and Publishers Editions are giclee prints.
Limited Editions and Artist Proofs:
The concept of an ‘edition’ is basic to the world of serial art. It is the Limited Edition which permits print makers and collectors to agree upon what is an original art print and what is a reproduction. A Limited Edition is defined as a high-quality reproduction of an original work of art, individually numbered, with the total of the reproductions stated. i.e. the 5th print of a total of 250. e.g 5/250
Limited Editions are printed on high-quality medium and are signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out (i.e. 250), no more limited edition prints of that image can be produced which is what can make the print valuable on the resale or ‘secondary market’.
Some additional prints may be marked A/P or Artist Proof and may also be numbered e.g. A/P 1/10 and signed by the artist. The number of artist’s proofs can vary (often 10% of the numbered edition) and may include copies produced while perfecting the edition. There is no real difference in the value or potential value of the limited edition or artist proof prints, however some collectors indicate a preference for a particular number of the edition, or an artist proof. Each Limited Edition print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Certificates of Authenticity:
The Certificate of Authenticity helps to distinguish the artist’s work from posters or basic reproductions. By offering information on the certificate, print makers and artists, can reinforce the authenticity of their work. The issuing of a Certificate of Authenticity adds additional information about the fine art print, including title, artist’s name, edition number, and is hand signed by the artist and/or publisher.
Offset Prints:
We also offer ‘offset’ fine art prints, which are printed on 200 to 300 gsm (thickness of the paper) quality satin paper. Offset printing, also called offset lithography, is a method of mass-production printing in which the images on metal plates are transferred (offset) to rubber blankets or rollers and then to the print media. The print media, usually paper, does not come into direct contact with the metal plates. The paper we use is far superior, and thicker to a poster, which is generally printed on 110-140 gsm gloss paper.
