BALFOUR, Charlotte

Charlotte was born in Winchester, U.K. and studied Arts at Oxford and Sussex Universities. She then taught in London schools and subsequently in Cairo. Charlotte arrived in Australia in 1978 and in 1982 was granted residential status because of her outstanding contribution to the Australian art world. Prior to 2000 she divided her time between the U.K. and Australia with exhibitions and commissions in both countries.

The rural landscape and individual buildings of South Australia have been the source of inspiration for Charlotte’s paintings, which combine her creative attention to detail with a distinctive and highly individual perception.

“It was the Australian light, especially the late afternoon light when everything is etched, that became a direct source of revelation and inspiration to me”.
