GOODALL, Frederick

A Jewish couple of the House of Levi had a child at a time when Pharaoh had decreed that all male Jewish children would be put to death. When they could hide him no longer, they prepared a basket of papyrus, coated it in tar and pitch, and hid the infant in it, among the bulrushes on the banks of the Nile. Pharaoh’s daughter, Batya went to the river to bathe. On finding the child and being unable to bear children herself, she saw it as a sign from the Gods. She was happy to pay for the child’s care and upbringing. Unknowingly, employing the real mother of Moses to nurse him.
