POYNTER, Sir Edward

Edward John Poynter became one of the most popular painters of his day. He was later very influential as an administrator, becoming the first Slade Professor of Fine Art, Director of the National Gallery and President of the Royal Academy. He was knighted in 1896, made a baronet in 1902, and given the KCVO in 1918. Much more than a practising artist. He was a teacher, lecturer, and a man of affairs. President of the Royal Academy together with the much more difficult post of Director of The National Gallery.
