Description
“Endormies“, 1904 by Australian artist Rupert Bunny (1864-1947) is a peaceful image of two ladies resting on a river bank with white swans behind them.
The original is an oil on canvas measuring 130.6 x 200.5 cm. It was purchased, thanks to the Felton bequest, in 1911 by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). It is, however, not currently on display.
Rupert Bunny and Australian Art
Born in Melbourne in 1864, Rupert Bunny became one of Australia’s most internationally recognised artists during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After moving to Paris, he developed a successful career and gained acclaim for blending traditional academic painting with the softer, imaginative style of Symbolism and Romanticism.
