Description

Before the Storm (c.1893) by Rupert Bunny

Before the Storm (c.1893) is one of the most dramatic and visually striking works created by celebrated Australian artist Rupert Bunny. Originally painted in oil on canvas, the artwork combines mythology, symbolism, and the raw power of nature in a scene filled with movement and emotion. This high-quality reproduction captures the beauty and atmosphere of the original masterpiece, making it an exceptional card for art collectors and lovers of art.

A Powerful Mythological Scene

The painting depicts nude male figures riding white horses through dark, turbulent seas beneath a storm-filled sky. The dramatic composition creates a strong sense of tension and anticipation, perfectly reflecting the title Before the Storm. Inspired by classical mythology and Symbolist art, Bunny’s work explores themes of nature, heroism, and human emotion.

The contrast between the glowing figures and the dark ocean gives the painting a theatrical and dreamlike quality. Bunny’s flowing brushwork and careful arrangement of forms guide the viewer’s eye across the canvas, creating a remarkable sense of motion and energy.

Rupert Bunny and Australian Art

Born in Melbourne in 1864, Rupert Bunny became one of Australia’s most internationally recognised artists during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After moving to Paris, he developed a successful career and gained acclaim for blending traditional academic painting with the softer, imaginative style of Symbolism and Romanticism.

Before the Storm is regarded as one of Bunny’s important early works and demonstrates his exceptional ability to combine technical skill with emotional depth and imaginative storytelling.

The Tragic Loss of the Original Painting

Sadly, the original painting was irreparably damaged in a fire at St Kilda Town Hall in Melbourne on 8 April 1991. Although the charred canvas was stabilised by conservationists to prevent further deterioration, the artwork itself could not be restored.

Today, the image remains admired for its mythological imagery, dramatic atmosphere, and masterful technique. This fine art giclée reproduction preserves the richness and detail of Rupert Bunny’s remarkable painting, making it a stunning choice for home décor, office interiors, or fine art collections.
