Australia is home to the remarkable short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), one of the world’s few egg-laying mammals. Its body is covered with coarse fur and sharp protective spines, while its long, narrow snout and sticky tongue help it feed on ants and termites. Although the echidna appears slow and gentle, it is well adapted to life in the Australian bush. When threatened, it curls into a ball or digs quickly into the ground, leaving only its sharp spines exposed.
