The Australian frilled-neck lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) is one of the country’s most unique reptiles, famous for the large frill of skin around its neck. This frill, supported by long spines of cartilage, usually lies flat but can flare out dramatically when the lizard feels threatened. Found mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea, it prefers warm, dry environments such as savannas and woodlands.

The frilled-neck lizard is an excellent climber, spending much of its time in trees, but it also hunts on the ground for insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. When startled, it may rise on its hind legs, display its frill, and even run away bipedally, creating a striking and almost comical sight. This display is not just for show—it’s a defense mechanism to appear larger and more dangerous.

Its distinctive appearance and behaviour have made it an iconic symbol of Australian wildlife.
