Description

La Sieste by Pierre Bonnard (1900)

La Sieste (Siesta), 1900 is a warm and intimate painting by French artist Pierre Bonnard. The title means “The Nap” in English. The artwork shows a woman lying face down on a bed, resting peacefully in a softly lit room. Her dogs naps with her at her bedside. Bonnard uses gentle brushstrokes and glowing colours to create a calm, dreamlike mood. The setting feels private and quiet, as if we have stepped into a personal moment.

Bonnard painted this work at the turn of the 20th century, during a time of great change in modern art. He was associated with a group of young artists known as Les Nabis. The Nabis were inspired by artists such as Paul Gauguin and focused on bold colour, pattern, and emotion rather than strict realism. In La Sieste, you can see this influence in the rich fabrics, decorative wallpaper, and flattened perspective.

Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) became known for his intimate domestic scenes. He often painted his wife, Marthe, in relaxed, everyday settings. Rather than dramatic subjects, he preferred quiet moments filled with light and colour. His style helped bridge Impressionism and later modern movements.

Today, La Sieste is admired for its warmth, texture, and honest portrayal of rest and stillness. The painting reflects Bonnard’s love of colour and pattern, as well as his ability to turn an ordinary moment into something timeless. It remains an important example of French Post-Impressionist art from around 1900.
