Description

The Lady of Shalott (1888) is a painting by British artist John William Waterhouse. It is a powerful and emotional image that explores themes like loneliness, longing, and tragic love. The painting is based on a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In the poem, a woman is cursed to live alone in a tower. She can only see the world through a mirror and must never look outside directly.

Waterhouse shows the Lady of Shalott at a key moment in her story. She has just left her tower and is floating down a river in a small boat. She is heading toward Camelot, knowing this journey will end in her death. Around her are white lilies and flowers, which stand for purity and innocence. She wears a flowing white dress, and her long golden hair makes her look otherworldly. Her face looks sad and calm, showing she knows her fate. She stares downward, lost in thought. Bright reds and golds in the boat stand out sharply against the dark river, creating a feeling that something tragic is about to happen.

Waterhouse uses light and colour with great skill. A soft glow shines on the Lady, while the river and background remain dark. This contrast highlights how cut off she is from the world. Her reflection in the water adds another layer of meaning. It suggests a broken view of life and love—she is trapped in a world she cannot fully enter.

With rich details and emotion, Waterhouse tells a sad and beautiful story. This painting remains one of his most famous works. It shows the Pre-Raphaelite love of myth, deep feelings, and the idea that life and beauty are fleeting.
