The Birth of Venus (1879) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau – Fine Art Giclée Print

Bring timeless beauty and classical elegance into your home with The Birth of Venus, painted in 1879 by the celebrated French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. This iconic masterpiece captures one of the most famous stories from Greek mythology. As a result, it remains one of Bouguereau’s most admired and recognisable works.

Description of the Image

At the centre of the painting stands Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. She rises gracefully from the sea on a large shell, a traditional symbol of her mythical birth. Her long flowing hair and serene expression create a sense of calm and divine beauty.

Around her, delicate figures welcome her arrival. On one side, a female attendant holds a flowing cloth. On the other, a figure believed to represent the wind god Zephyrus helps guide her toward the shore. Behind them, the soft sea and open sky create a peaceful and luminous setting. Consequently, the painting feels harmonious, elegant, and dreamlike.

The History of The Birth of Venus

Bouguereau painted The Birth of Venus in 1879 during the height of his career. Inspired by classical mythology, he reimagined this ancient story through the lens of 19th-century Academic art. Unlike earlier interpretations, his version focuses on idealised beauty, graceful movement, and extraordinary realism. Today, the painting is celebrated as a masterpiece of French Academic painting.
