Description

Zodiacal Man (c.1412–1416) by Limbourg Brothers – Fine Art Print

Discover the beauty of medieval art and symbolism with Zodiacal Man, a remarkable illuminated image created in the early 15th century by the Limbourg Brothers. This intricate work comes from the famous manuscript Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Gothic illumination.

The History of Zodiacal Man

The Limbourg Brothers created this image around 1412–1416 as part of a lavish prayer book commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry. The manuscript combines religious devotion with scientific and astrological knowledge. During the Middle Ages, people believed that the zodiac signs influenced different parts of the human body. As a result, images like Zodiacal Man served both artistic and educational purposes.

Description of the Image

At the centre of the composition two human figures stand back to back, shown within an oval frame. Surrounding them are the twelve zodiac signs, each carefully illustrated in rich colour and detail. These symbols connect to different parts of the body, reflecting medieval ideas about astrology and health.

The figures are set against a deep blue background filled with delicate patterns. Around the outer border, decorative elements and inscriptions add further meaning and visual richness. Gold accents and intricate linework enhance the sense of luxury. Consequently, the image feels both scientific and spiritual, blending art with early beliefs about the human body and the cosmos.
