Dean Cornwell (1892-1960) was one of America’s most influential illustrators during the first half of the twentieth century. He became famous for his dramatic magazine illustrations, book artwork, advertising commissions, and large-scale public murals. His ability to combine classical drawing techniques with cinematic storytelling helped define the Golden Age of American Illustration.
Cornwell studied under celebrated illustrator Harvey Dunn and quickly developed a distinctive style characterised by strong compositions, expressive figures, and rich colour palettes. Throughout his career, his work appeared in leading publications including Cosmopolitan, Redbook, and Good Housekeeping, while his murals decorated libraries, government buildings, and public spaces across the United States.
Although Options was painted early in his career, it already demonstrates the storytelling ability and technical excellence that would make Dean Cornwell one of America’s most admired artists.
