About the Painting
At first glance, Options appears to depict a quiet moment between a man and woman seated in an elegant room. However, the painting offers far more than a simple portrait. The formally dressed gentleman looks intently towards the woman, whose back is turned to the viewer as she sits in a flowing white evening gown. Their expressions and body language suggest an important conversation or life-changing decision, yet Cornwell deliberately leaves the story unfinished.
This sense of mystery is one of the painting’s greatest strengths. Rather than providing clear answers, the artist encourages each viewer to interpret the scene in their own way. The title, Options, reinforces this idea, hinting at choices, relationships, and uncertain futures.
A standout feature of the composition is the richly upholstered blue furniture, decorated with colourful birds and floral motifs. The vibrant pattern contrasts beautifully with the woman’s white dress and the gentleman’s dark formal attire, creating a balanced composition full of visual interest. Warm interior lighting and loose yet confident brushwork add atmosphere and intimacy, drawing the viewer deeper into the unfolding narrative.
About Dean Cornwell
Dean Cornwell was one of America’s most influential illustrators during the first half of the twentieth century. He became famous for his dramatic magazine illustrations, book artwork, advertising commissions, and large-scale public murals. His ability to combine classical drawing techniques with cinematic storytelling helped define the Golden Age of American Illustration.
Cornwell studied under celebrated illustrator Harvey Dunn and quickly developed a distinctive style characterised by strong compositions, expressive figures, and rich colour palettes. Throughout his career, his work appeared in leading publications including Cosmopolitan, Redbook, and Good Housekeeping, while his murals decorated libraries, government buildings, and public spaces across the United States.
Although Options was painted early in his career, it already demonstrates the storytelling ability and technical excellence that would make Dean Cornwell one of America’s most admired artists.
