The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is one of Australia’s most beloved native animals, easily recognised by its round, fluffy ears, large nose, and thick grey fur. Despite being called a “koala bear,” it is actually a marsupial, carrying its young, called joeys, in a pouch. Koalas live in eucalyptus forests along Australia’s eastern and southeastern coasts, where they feed almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves.

These leaves are low in nutrition and difficult to digest, so koalas conserve energy by sleeping up to 18–20 hours a day. Their slow lifestyle and specialised diet make them highly dependent on healthy forests. Koalas face threats from habitat loss, disease, climate change, and road accidents, which have led to population declines in some regions.

Gentle in nature and deeply connected to Australia’s identity, the koala has become a symbol of wildlife conservation and the need to protect native habitats for future generations.
